Ways to Calm Yourself Down

We all experience times where we need to calm down; when we are upset, anxious, angry, sad, or have a ton of energy. We may want to calm down so we can rest, think more clearly and make better decisions, and so we don’t do anything that we would regret. There are a number of exercises that we can do to help us calm down so that we can clear our mind. And different exercises work differently for different types of people.

Below is a list of possible things you can do to help calm yourself down in different situations. Different exercises may work better than others for you. And different exercises may work differently depending on the reason you are needing to calm down.

Ways to help yourself calm down are:

  • Take a deep breath.
  • Count backwards from 10 to 1.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Talk to a friend or trusted adult.
  • Write in a journal.
  • Listen to some music.
  • Exercise.
  • Drink some water.
  • Guided meditation.

It takes time to learn what best works for you in different situations. Keep trying new exercises until you find what works best for you. We all have to continue learning and working on these things our whole lives, so don’t be discouraged when certain exercises don’t work as well for you. Keep trying new techniques, and you will find what works best for you.
