How the CASEL Framework is Used in the Rock Digi Curriculum

Rock In Prevention used the CASEL framework when creating the Rock Digi program. The CASEL framework identifies the following as “helping cultivate skills and environments that advance students’ learning and development” (casel.org).

The CASEL Framework includes the “CASEL 5” which includes: self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Self-Awareness is the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts.

Self-Management is the ability to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations and to achieve goals and aspirations.

Social Awareness is the ability to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts.

Relationship Skills are the abilities to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups.

Responsible Decision-Making is the ability to make caring and constructive choices about personal behavior and social interactions across diverse situations.

In the Rock Digi program, we have lessons on topics such as accepting others, empathy, anger management, pursuing what you love or finding your spark, coping with grief and loss, building healthy relationships, goal-setting, problem solving, and many more. All of these topics include focuses on one or more of the CASEL 5.

In the Rock Digi program, we offer additional activities such as our “School Home Partnership,” which allows for the lesson topics to be expanded to being discussed at home with families and caregivers as well as in the school and the classroom. CASEL stresses the importance of including families and caregivers in the students’ social and emotional learning journey. This helps families to form stronger connections and help students grow in their social and emotional development. And when there is that consistency between school and home, this really reinforces the social emotional learning topics that are being taught.

Free Trial Lessons are available at rockdigi.org where you can see how the Rock Digi lessons are formatted and the standards that the lessons meet.
